Thank you for contacting UNSW Future Students Team!

The UNSW School of Education offers an optional Teaching Area Eligibility Check for the Master of Teaching (Secondary) to help you understand whether your prior studies meet Subject Content Knowledge (SCK) requirements for your preferred teaching areas, as set by NESA.

This check is available for a limited time from 12 May to 12 August 2026. Applications Term 1 2027 open via UAC for domestic students in early September 2026. International students can apply directly to UNSW and applications for 2027 are now open.

You may nominate up to three preferred teaching areas, including a first teaching area and additional teaching area or double teaching area. You must review the Master of Teaching (Secondary) entry requirements and complete a self-assessment using the Subject Content Knowledge (SCK) requirements outlined under the Entry Requirements section before submitting your requested teaching areas.

Requests that do not include a completed self-assessment may not be processed. Additionally, we may request further information as follows: unit learning outcomes, assessment details, topics, content, resources.

If you are missing more than one unit in a teaching area, it may be recommended that you complete additional study, i.e., non-award study (domestic only) or a postgraduate certificate (domestic and international). Only one missing unit can be substituted with an elective course within your degree.

This is an informal recommendation only and does not constitute an offer or guarantee of eligibility. All applications are formally assessed through UAC (domestic) and UNSW Apply Online (international).

This eligibility check is most useful for students in the final year of their degree, those nearing completion, or graduates seeking confirmation of their teaching areas.

Please allow approximately 20 working days for a response.

If you’d like to proceed, please complete the template below and return it with your academic transcript.

You can view NESA’s Subject Content Knowledge Requirements document here.
